The Asiatic Lion

Scientific Name:  Panthera leo persica

Range & Habitat:  Confined to the Gir forest in Eastern India

Facts & Thoughts:
The Asiatic lion has been reduced to one location, the Gir Forest in India, but this could be to it's
advantage as conservation efforts have helped the population grow to over 400 in that area, meaning a
strong sustainable gene pool.

A little smaller than it's African relation, the Asiatic lion has many of the same characteristics but as
pointed out in the video generally has smaller family groups (known as prides).

The same issues that face all the Asian Great Cats are still threats to the Asiatic Lion today.  Poaching
and habitat loss are both monitored strongly in the Gir area meaning there is hope.
